Sep 30, 2012 · Hello, My dog Murphy was diagnosed with Cushings disease 7 years ago, she is now 13yrs old. I was told she would have 24 months after she was diagnosed. Cushing's disease, or hyperadrenocorticism, is a condition in dogs that occurs when the body produces too much cortisol. Cortisol is a hormone and natural steroid that helps regulate essential bodily functions, including metabolism, blood sugar, blood pressure, and immune responses.Cushing's syndrome is a collection of signs and symptoms due to prolonged exposure to glucocorticoids such as cortisol. Signs and symptoms may include high blood pressure, abdominal obesity but with thin arms and legs, reddish stretch marks, a round red face due to facial plethora, a fat lump between the shoulders, weak muscles, weak bones, acne, and fragile skin that heals poorly. Dogs with Cushing’s disease have clinical signs due to the chronically elevated cortisol levels in their circulation. Cortisol is the natural “prednisone” of the body. Too much cortisol causes the same things one would see with a dog receiving prednisone. My dog was diagnosed with cushings 5 years ago and she is doing well. Besides the fact that she drinks more water, her medication has put that under controlled. I have to admit that the testing every years and the medication every month is very expensive.
